A plan that expands the efforts to protect Lake Okeechobee won unanimous passage from the Senate last week. The Lake Okeechobee Protection Plan set up a means for acquiring land and creating water treatment mechanisms north of the lake. The measure (SB 392) also calls for the expansion of programs to protect the Caloosahatchee River and St. Lucie River watersheds.
Although the Legislature still hasn't signed off on the money for the project, Senate President Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, says he has committed $100 million toward the effort. The bill calls for the issuance of bonds to finance the plan.
