FARM BILL DEADLINE MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE TO MEET

The current farm bill expires March 15, and Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer says that negotiations on the new bill are unlikely to be completed by that deadline.

Schafer did say he feels that the Bush administration can reach an agreement with Congress on a new farm bill, but that April would be a more realistic date.

The Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance continues to meet with congressional negotiators to emphasize that the industry needs them to protect funding promised in the House and Senate versions of the bill. The industry prefers the House version because more funds are allocated for specialty crop research.
