FLORIDA HOUSE, SENATE PROPOSE LEAN BUDGET

The Florida Senate approved a $65.9 billion buget April 9, while the House announced its $65.1 billion proposal the next day.

Both budgets trim funding for health care programs, schools, Everglades restoration and other initiatives.

The House budget is about $7 billion less than last year’s spending plan, and the Senate budget is about $6 billion less.

The budget shortfall is blamed on the state’s sagging economy and resulting drop-off in tax revenues. Negotiations to work out the differences in the two plans promise to take up much of lawmakers’ time before the session ends May 2
