CONFEREES HAMMERING OUT COMPROMISE FARM BILL

The House of Representatives presented its farm bill proposal to members of the farm bill Conference Committee as they met for the first time April 10. The House proposal is between $5.5 and $6 billion over the baseline amount.

Senate Agriculture Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said the Senate would take it under advisement and offer a counter proposal when the conference reconvenes within the next few days.

The House proposal removed disaster assistance provisions, but maintained the levels of funding for the specialty crop section. The Senate is expected to make a counter offer that will total $10 billion over baseline.

Funding and allocations remain as major hurdles in the negotiations
