CONGRESS APPROVES ONE-WEEK FARM BILL EXTENSION

The Senate and House approved a one-week extension of the 2002 farm bill April 24. Negotiators are working together to bridge differences in the House and Senate’s versions of the bill but acknowledged their work would not be completed by the April 25 deadline.

Although President Bush has called for a one-year extension of the current farm bill, which would put negotiations in the hands of those who are elected in November, he is expected to sign the one-week extension. Administration officials say he would approve a farm bill only if the offsets it contains are those that he has already approved.
