ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATES THREATEN TO SUE EPA OVER POLLUTION LIMITS

The Florida Wildlife Federation, the Sierra Club and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida have notified U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson of their intent to sue the agency in 60 days for failing to uphold the Clean Water Act. The groups want a judge to order EPA to adopt new standards to control pollution in areas such as the Caloosahatchee River, the St. Johns River, the St. Lucie River, Southwest Florida beaches and Lake Okeechobee.

They say they want EPA to stick to a 10-year-old plan where states were to set nutrient limits by 2003 or, if they did not, then the EPA would step in and set the limits. The EPA recently allowed the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to delay new standards until 2012.
