NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH NOW OFFICIAL

The U.S. House of Representatives voted April 29 to make July National Watermelon Month. Bob Morrissey, executive director of the National Watermelon Association, said that the key to this resolution is that it does not denote one particular year to honor the fruit.

“The U.S. House has a different set of rules than the Senate, which allowed us to make the resolution last for many years to come (without having to go back to Congress year after year),” he said in a letter to members of the industry. “This will allow all of us to pursue and promote National Watermelon Month in various ways, and utilize the designation to promote watermelon in numerous methods – point-of-sale, advertisements, in store signage, bins, etc.”

Congressmen Adam Putnam (R-Fla.) and Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) sponsored the resolution along with the 54 co-sponsors from numerous states.
