IFAS BUDGET CUT SIX PERCENT - CONSISTENT WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS

The University of Florida’s 2008-09 budget plan released May 5 includes a 6 percent reduction in state funds for the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Although the percentage was consistent with reductions for other parts of the university, IFAS’ dollar amount was larger than those of other departments.

“We will try to protect our core missions, but when you take this cut in addition to the cut we took in the fall, which was $7.2 million, IFAS will begin the year with almost $17 million less than we had last year. That’s a huge amount of money, and it will impact all of our programs,” said Dr. Jimmy Cheek, senior vice president and head of IFAS.

A complete list of reductions for the university and IFAS is at www.president.ufl.edu.
